Christoph CechBorn in 1960 in Vienna

1967-83: Studied piano, rhythm (H.-U.Staeps), percussion instruments (K.Hammer), arrangement (R.Portisch) and jazz theory (H.Czadek) at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna

Since 1977: Co-founder of, pianist in and composer for numerous experimental jazz ensembles: Nouvelle Cuisine Bigband, Jubilo Elf, Striped Roses, Trio Mondautos, Duo Mütter/Cech, Camerata Obscura.

Appearances at numerous festivals, extensive touring

Since 1996: Co-founder and leader/conductor of the Janus Ensemble, a group active in the field of contemporary music

Since 1994: Co-founder and jury member of the Gustav Mahler Composition Prize of the City of Klagenfurt (awarded by Musikforum Viktring)

1997-99, 2002-03: Artistic director of the Grabenfest Festival


Pedagogical Activities:

Since 1993: numerous projects with apprentices and secondary school students
Since 1998: Lecturer in arrangement at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna
1999: Appointment as head of the Department of Jazz and Popular Music at the Bruckner Conservatory Linz
2001-2003: Curator of the Moment ! Music Project of the ÖKS–Austrian Culture Service

1988, 1995: Work Grant of the City of Vienna
1992: 1st Prize in the composition competition of the Conservatory of the City of Vienna
1994: Leibnitz Art Prize for Big Band Composition
1995: State Grant of the Republic of Austria
1997: Publicity Prize of Austro Mechana
1998: Hans Koller Prize for the best jazz CD of the year (Nouvelle Cuisine Bigband: Ultimate Sentences)
2003: 1st Prize in the composition competition of the City of Ternitz and the Austrian Association of Composers
