Until 1994, he served as artistic director of the “Open Music” series in Graz.

Wim van Zutphen founded the Austrian Art Ensemble with the aim of establishing a fixed place for music of the 20th century in the concert programs of the city of Graz and the province of Styria. At the outset, the group performed exclusively works of music theater in a classic chamber music instrumental lineup; over the years, there has been a transition to an increasingly instrumental concert program. The ensemble attempts to highlight the unexpected connections between music of the 20th century and works of previous epochs. The Austrian Art Ensemble has performed in Austria, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, South East Asia and many other locations.
