Brucknerfest

The Idea

Following the opening of the Brucknerhaus in 1974, the establishment of a very special musical festival was the next logical step. Naturally, the concept was based on precursors like the Wiener Festwochen and the Salzburger Festspiele; on the other hand, the International Brucknerfest was conceived as a purely musical festival with Anton Bruckner’s oeuvre as its centerpiece. Nevertheless, the traditional orientation of the Brucknerfest was not really suited to endowing Linz with its own distinctive image, which, in 1979, motivated Dr. Horst Stadlmayr and Dr. Hannes Leopoldseder to augment the Brucknerfest with Ars Electronica and the Klangwolke (Cloud of Sound). It was precisely this blend of future and tradition that has endowed the Brucknerfest and thus the City of Linz with an inimitable, high-profile image that has come to be recognized worldwide.
