An epochal journey into the mystical world of gods between past, present and future, between earth, sky and underworld, faith, love and hope, full of imposing and breathtaking surprises.

When a mystical story with a time reference kisses awake the Linz Danube banks: Poetry, wild tyranny, madness of giants, enmity that leads to friendship and culminates in love, may be expected. When infinite grief, which raises the question of immortality, is at the center, a mother who worries about her tyrannical son, the world of the gods calls for help, forces of nature play a significant role, then it is said: Welcome to Linzer Klangwolke 22 presented by Sparkasse OÖ and LINZ AG.

The popular open-air spectacle on the banks of the Danube in front of the Brucknerhaus Linz has never been more promising, exciting, mystical and steeped in history! Imposing and breathtaking moments, gigantic ships whose wings become places of storytelling, oversized video stagings including fascinating light and sound design are sure to thrill the audience from the feminine perspective of MOTHER GILGAMESH, make them think and astonish them.

More than 5,000 years old and yet more topical than ever: one of the world's oldest surviving literary masterpieces is the focus of this year's mystical Linzer Klangwolke 22, presented by Sparkasse OÖ and LINZ AG. With MOTHER GILGAMESH, the internationally renowned director Pierre Audi (staging of the Linzer Klangwolke 22) promises a very special story that is more than just touching - not only to tell - but also to bring to life! An epic between past, present and future between earth, sky and underworld, between faith, love and hope is developed through a new perspective, especially for the Linzer Klangwolke 22. Lots of special effects, breathtaking and scenically used pyrotechnics, a grandiose sound, light and exciting stage design, is at the Linzer Klangwolke 22 on September 10, 2022 in the center of the production.

Originally, the Gilgamesh epic was set on twelve tablets, some of which are still lost. Sumerian language and characters were only gradually deciphered until the mystical story could finally be made accessible to posterity. Until today, the work, which was thus written far before the Bible, has been translated several times, rarely set to music, and occasionally dramatized. The epic describes the story of Gilgamesh, a king of Uruk, his heroic deeds and adventures, his friendship with Enkidu, his death and Gilgamesh's search for immortality. In the end, the hero must realize that immortality is given only to the gods, but living and dying is part of human nature.

The staging is done by the internationally successful artistic director, director and music manager Pierre Audi. His images make it possible to bring out a language that is part of the conception and overall narrative of the story of King Gilgamesh. The story of Gilgamesh is both timeless and contemporary for all humanity, it also resonates with us today in our natural and technological world

Urs Schönebaum is responsible for the three ships that serve as floating stage sets. For the Linz Klangwolke 22, he designs three different worlds in which the epic is set and makes them visually tangible. The stage ships will be in constant use at the same time, telling the legendary story in the middle of the Danube. Burning elements and fascinating pyrotechnics will provide breathtaking moments. Besides the stage design Schönebaum is also responsible for the light design.

A special highlight, not only visually, but also for the ears, will be the sound design, especially put together for MOTHER GILGAMESH, which combines compositions by Stefan Gregory with musical works and original quotations by famous composers such as Anton Bruckner, of course, and contains and recombines quotations from other impressive works of the entire existing music history. Also six short choral sequences - among others by Anton Bruckner - are included in the newly composed soundscape by Stefan Gregory, which will be performed by the famous St. Florian Boys Choir.

Frenchman Gilbert Nouno is responsible for the video design. With his image and video creations, he brings the audience of the Linz Klangwolke to a border where reality and imagination meet.

Sunnyi Melles, one of the best-known and most versatile exceptional actresses of our time, slips into the narrator role of MOTHER GILGAMESH, developed especially for the Linz Klangwolke 22. The titular character of the mother with her observations, warnings and visions becomes the central, almost mystical figure of Klangwolke 22.

But it is not only the special effects, the stunts, the musical sound design and the very special version of this narrative that will make the Linz Klangwolke 22 presented by Sparkasse OÖ and LINZ AG shine to its very special highlight, but also a great deal of expertise and creativity on the part of director Pierre Audi and his team.
