Internationales Brucknerfest Linz 2023

AWAKENING. "THE ETERNAL-FEMININE DRAWS US UP."

True to the motto from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's "Faust II", the International Brucknerfest Linz 2023 will focus on muses, female musicians, patrons, dedicatees and composers, but also on women as the subject of works.

True to the motto from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's "Faust II", the International Brucknerfest Linz 2023 will focus on muses, female musicians, patrons, dedicatees and composers, but also on women as the subject of works. For female figures from mythology and world literature have inspired composers of all times. The spectrum ranges from the victim Andromeda to the characters Isolde and Juliet, who died of love, to the murderess Medea. The most frequently sung about saints, Mary and Cecilia, the patron saint of (church) music, also represent the central functions assigned to women by Christianity: mother and martyr.

Music by Anton Bruckner, on the other hand, will not be performed in view of the presentation of his complete works planned in 2024 to celebrate his 200th birthday. Nevertheless, the theme has a lot to do with Bruckner, as it marks the great void in his life, in which all attempts to marry failed and contact with women beyond the family was largely limited to that with the housekeeper and students.
