Upper Austria's greatest composer celebrates his birthday - and we are celebrating with him!
In 2024, the Brucknerhaus Linz has two reasons to celebrate: the 200th birthday of its name patron Anton Bruckner and its own 50th anniversary. This will be celebrated with a concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, which will perform Bruckner's 7th Symphony conducted by Zubin Mehta - just as it did exactly 50 years ago, albeit with Herbert von Karajan at the podium. At the time, Karajan summed up his impressions of the architecture and acoustics of the Brucknerhaus with the words: "An experience of intoxicating beauty."
Not only the Brucknerhaus Linz is participating in the program for Bruckner's 200th birthday, but also the other houses of LIVA, i.e. the Posthof Linz, the children's cultural center Kuddelmuddel and LIVA Sport are contributing exciting projects, thus guaranteeing diversity and unusual approaches to Bruckner.
The Posthof Linz is embarking on a search for Next Bruckner among young songwriters in its own concert series, has commissioned the famous São Paulo Dance Company to enter into a dialogue with Bruckner's music, and is premiering Paulus Hochgatterer's commissioned work Der schlafende Wal (The Sleeping Whale).
Also a commissioned work is Der merkwürdige Herr Bruckner (The strange Mr. Bruckner), a puppet theater piece that the Kuddelmuddel Children's Cultural Center at the Brucknerhaus Linz hopes will introduce children to the person Anton Bruckner.
Sports enthusiasts will not miss out either - LIVA Sport and the Linz Danube Marathon invite you to an enjoyable run on the Anton Bruckner running course on September 15, starting at the Alter Dom and finishing at the Brucknerhaus Linz! Following the competition, the newly designed running course will be opened to the public as a unique, free-to-use, permanent "symphony of running".
In the Brucknerhaus itself, the New Year's Concert of the Bruckner Orchestra Linz on 1 January will kick off the Bruckner Year 2024. Highlights of the International Bruckner Festival 2024 are concerts by the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst on Bruckner's birthday in Ansfelden (4 September) and by the Vienna Philharmonic under Christian Thielemann (19 September) in the Brucknerhaus. In addition, all eleven Bruckner symphonies will be performed in their original sound in a cycle - an experience that only the Bruckner city of Linz can offer.
